Why Identifying Your Exact Windscreen Matters
Picture this: you’re heading to work when a stone chips your windscreen. You book a fitter, they turn up without the right glass or sensor bracket, and you’re booked in again for a replacement. In our experience that wasted time is the most common frustration drivers face.
This guide is for drivers, fleet managers and van converters in Essex and Hertfordshire who want a fast, correct windscreen job first time. Read on to learn how to identify the exact screen, what photos to send, when repair is safe, and what ADAS calibration involves so you can decide quickly and confidently.
What Most People Get Wrong
Most people assume any windscreen will fit; a common issue we see is ordering a visually similar screen that won’t accept the existing rain sensor or camera bracket, leading to delays and extra calibration costs.
When This Doesn’t Apply
If your vehicle is a classic car, heavily modified conversion or has a non-standard aftermarket HUD or tint fitted, the usual VIN-and-photo route may not identify the correct glass; in those cases we’ll advise an on-site check first.
Quick Checklist
- Have your 17-character VIN ready
- Take a clear photo of the mirror area
- Photograph the glass stamp and the damage
- Tell us if you have HUD, heated, acoustic or solar glass
Find And Read Your VIN In 60 Seconds
Your 17-character VIN is usually visible at the driver’s side base of the windscreen, on the driver’s door jamb or on the V5C. In our experience a bright, reflection-free photo of the full code is the fastest way to a correct quote. Wipe the plate first and check for confusing characters like 0/O or 1/I.
If you can’t read it, your V5C or door sticker usually helps. For tricky IDs we offer specialist help via our windscreen identification page linked below.
Mirror Area Check: Sensors And Camera Brackets
Look behind and around the rear-view mirror for black frit areas, clear camera windows, gel pads for sensors or plastic housings. These zones are often unique to a fitment; the wrong screen won’t accept your sensor and ADAS won’t work properly.
Take two photos: one straight on and one at an angle to avoid glare. We can confirm parts from those images and advise if ADAS calibration will be needed after fitting.

Glass Tech: Acoustic, Solar, Heated And HUD
Acoustic glass may show an ear symbol or the word “Acoustic”. Solar/IR coatings can appear blue or bronze, and a sunband may sit along the top edge. Tiny wires usually indicate a heated screen; HUD areas need a special layer. Photograph the glass stamp in a lower corner so we can read brand and spec.
If you’re unsure about codes, see our explainer on what AS2 means and we’ll interpret the stamp for you.
Tints And Legal Limits For Windscreens
UK rules require the windscreen to transmit at least 75% of visible light; front side windows usually need 70% on post-1985 cars. Factory sunbands are fine, aftermarket films across the main swept area are not. If you’re considering chameleon or mirror tints for a conversion, check our guidance first.
The Five Photos That Let Us ID Your Screen Fast
Send these five clear photos and we can often quote the same day and arrive with the correct glass:
- VIN plate (full code, clean, no reflections)
- Full front view of the car and windscreen (outside)
- Close-up of the mirror/sensor/camera area
- Glass stamp in a lower corner
- Damage with a coin or key for scale
Hold your phone 30–50cm away for close-ups and tilt slightly to reduce glare. Prefer WhatsApp? Use our Send 5 Photos tool and we’ll guide you step by step.
Repair Or Replace? How To Decide
We always prefer repair where it is safe and effective. A small chip outside the driver’s critical sightline will usually repair in under an hour and save your excess. A spreading crack, large edge damage or a chip in the driver’s line often means replacement.
We’ll assess clearly, explain the risks and costs, and recommend the option that keeps you safe and saves you money where possible. Many repairs and replacements can be completed on your driveway.

ADAS Calibration After Replacement: What To Expect
Modern cars often require calibration after a new screen. Static calibration uses targets and precise measurements; dynamic calibration is done on a controlled drive. Some vehicles need both. In our experience getting calibration right the first time is critical for AEB, lane-keep and sign recognition to work correctly.
We can perform driveway calibrations when conditions and space allow, or use our Essex workshop for fixed-target work. We’ll explain the method required for your vehicle when we confirm the booking.
Booking Made Easy: Insurance, Mobile Service And Areas We Cover
We liaise directly with insurers and confirm authorisation where needed. Windscreen claims typically do not affect a no-claims bonus, but always check your policy. We’ll explain excesses and timings in plain English and keep you updated.
Same-week mobile fitting is common at homes and workplaces across Bishop’s Stortford, Harlow, Chelmsford, Braintree, Saffron Walden, Manningtree, Harwich and the wider North Essex and Hertfordshire area. Expect a lifetime workmanship warranty and responsible recycling.
Vans, Fleet And Conversions: Practical Tips
Vans often have multiple windscreen variants linked to trims and options. VINs and photos are vital to avoid downtime. For fleet customers we store vehicle data to speed future jobs and keep records tidy. Converting a van? We’ll advise on side window choices, legal tints and thermal comfort so your conversion is safe and durable.
Our Promise: Qualified Fitters, Quality Parts, Greener Disposal
Every job is carried out by IMI/ATA-qualified technicians using OEM-spec glass, primers and adhesives. We follow safe bonding times and complete quality checks before handover. Jay & Robs provides clear communication, fast responses and a lifetime workmanship warranty. Old glass is recycled responsibly through May Glass Recycling.
FAQs
How Can I Tell Whether To Repair Or Replace My Windscreen?
Send photos of the damage and the mirror area. We’ll advise whether a repair will restore strength and visibility or whether replacement is safer. We explain costs and insurance options up front.
How Do I Know If My Car Needs ADAS Calibration After A New Screen?
If your car has a camera-based system (lane assist, AEB, HUD), it usually needs calibration. We’ll confirm the specific static or dynamic method for your make and model when you send the VIN and photos.
What Should I Send To Get A Same-Day Quote?
Five photos (VIN, full front view, mirror area, glass stamp, damage with scale) and the VIN code are normally enough for a same-day quote. Use our Send 5 Photos tool to be guided.
Can You Service My Workplace Or Fleet On Site?
Yes. Our mobile team fits at homes, workplaces and fleet yards. We can store fleet specs to reduce repeat identification time and aim to minimise downtime.
Will Claiming Through Insurance Affect My No-Claims Bonus?
Windscreen claims usually do not affect no-claims bonuses, but policies vary. We’ll liaise with your insurer and explain any excess or implications before work starts.
